WING CHUN SYSTEM
The Forms are a prearranged set of movements used to develop and programme your body. Each movement or shape within a form is used for defensive & offensive purposes. You will find similarities in Win Chun that you would in Boxing, BJJ, Muay Thai to Sticks, it's your ability to interpret the information and make it yours.
Wing Chun has six forms. Three empty-hand forms, two weapons forms, and one form performed on the wooden dummy.
Siu Nim Tao - 1st Form
First form teaches you the repotiore of shapes, body mechanics and structure. This is practiced in a stationary position, focusing on stance, stability and hand movements.
Chum Kiu - 2nd Form
This form shows you how to move dynamically, becoming familiar with footwork and angles to position yourself in places where you can hit and not be hit. This form does show you how to engage your hips to generate power.
Biu Jee - 3rd Form
This is the third and final empty hand form in Wing Chun. Its practical concepts on recovery and getting back to your structure.
Biu Jee also incorporates elbows, elbow blocks, hooks, ducking, headlock escapes and what you are able to extrapolate without making it up to fit your narrative. At this point you should have an understanding of the various hand techniques in various applications. It still uses the concepts of 1st and 2nd form just with a deeper understanding.
Wooden Dummy Form
The Wooden Dummy is used to develop timing, arm and leg co-ordination, accuracy, application of force, distance, judgement, alignment of the body, footwork and to teach practitioners how to flow smoothly from technique to technique.
The dummy is a refinement tool only it is not an opponent.
Long Pole Form
The long pole were used in hunting as well as in battle. The pole is a stick between five and six feet in length. It focuses on structure of moving an object. There are principles that transfer from the pole to footwork and other science of fighting. Its not very practical as it's 6 feet long, try manoeuvring that on a bus or train in todays times, however it does have its benefits to learn as well as transferable structrual integrity.
Butterfly Short Sword Form (Bat Jam Do)
The butterfly sword is a weapon used primarily by martial artists of southern China. The blade length of the weapon is equal to the fist and the forearm, and is mainly used in close-quarter fighting because of their short length with emphasis of precision and coordination. What you learn in all your forms transfer to the knives form and what you learn in knives form transfers to your empty hand forms. Remember this does not mean you have completed the system when you receive this it's mearly the beginning of your journey.
Like anything you do in life if you can attempt to adopt the idea of 'Everlasting Spring Time' this gives you the nudge to look within and over stand your self and improve.
